“My experience with paddling this past year has brought peace to my life. When I am out on the smooth , crisp,  cool water I feel free. I feel the comfort of new friends that know exactly what I have gone through. I have proof that there is a God because he is there with me and my fellow paddlers in the Dragon boat… he has shown me that good things happen from bad experiences.”   - Susan Hamill

“Keeping busy, mind and body, is necessary for me to have good health. I was delighted when I saw in the Tribune that Dragon boat paddling was coming to Welland. I signed up immediately and have enjoyed every minute. Part of that comes with getting in that great big boat with 19 other breast cancer survivors and paddling like mad to move that boat through the water. We work hard and entertain each other.  Not a practice goes by that we don’t learn and laugh. I can’t wait till we can get into the water again this spring and look forward to meeting fellow paddlers and new paddlers.”   – Billie Atkinson

“Dragon boating has given me back a sense of belonging, which I lost once I became mother, driver, etc. as my children grew up.  There is no reason why any woman, at any age, should deny herself the chance to be young again and get out and play in the water. I had never heard of dragon boating, but when I read that it was for breast cancer survivors, no experience needed, I got excited.  I’ve always loved the water but had never been in any small craft during my life.  After going through a long year with treatment and recovery this was my opportunity to do something for myself.  I have met the most wonderful people and gained new friendships.  We have worked hard together, got fit together, laughed, cried, and goofed around (my favourite part).”   – Kathy Abbruscato

“Dragon Boating has given me so much joy.  I’ve met so many wonderful ladies.  It is nice to have the friendship and support from woman who have had similar health experiences.  I feel comfortable talking to any one of them if I have any questions, or feel the need to talk about something.  It is great to be a part of a team and is lots of fun.  It has helped me get back into exercising and given me something to look forward to do.”   – Ann Reid
